Background of the study
Social media platforms serve as critical arenas for language use and innovation in Nigeria. WhatsApp and Facebook, in particular, offer contrasting communicative environments. WhatsApp, known for its private and immediate messaging, encourages informal language use characterized by codeswitching, abbreviations, and emoticons. In contrast, Facebook facilitates more public and sustained interactions where language tends to be more elaborated with longer posts and comments. This comparative study investigates how these platforms shape language use among Nigerian users. It examines differences in vocabulary, syntax, and stylistic choices that arise from the distinct social functions and affordances of WhatsApp and Facebook. The study considers how cultural, contextual, and technological factors interact to produce unique linguistic styles. In doing so, it highlights the dynamic interplay between personal identity and public discourse, showcasing the adaptability of language in digital contexts (Ibrahim, 2024). The research underscores the significance of platform-specific communication styles in understanding contemporary Nigerian language practices and provides insights into the evolution of digital literacy in the country (Okeke, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the pervasive use of WhatsApp and Facebook in Nigeria, research comparing language use across these platforms is limited. Most studies treat digital communication as a homogenous entity without considering the specific linguistic dynamics fostered by different platforms. This oversight hinders a comprehensive understanding of how platform-specific features affect language use and innovation. Addressing this gap is essential for developing a nuanced picture of digital linguistic practices. This study aims to compare language use on WhatsApp and Facebook to determine how each platform influences vocabulary, syntax, and stylistic choices among Nigerian users (Chukwu, 2024).

Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative perspective on Nigerian digital language practices across popular social media platforms. The findings will enrich our understanding of online communication and inform strategies for digital literacy, media development, and sociolinguistic research (Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to WhatsApp and Facebook as used by Nigerian online communities. It focuses on language use in text-based interactions and does not consider visual content or other platforms.
